Into the kingdom we go; a world of magic, imagination, freedom, joy and yes, flying! My daughter, Jana and I are on a special mother/daughter Disneyland trip. Weather: sunny and warm. Jana has on her sparkly diamond anniversary Minnie Mouse bow, and we’re off.
Yes, there are lines. As we wait for the Peter Pan ride, the evil Queen from Snow White leers at us every so often from behind a tower curtain. Oh, she is an evil one! But she doesn’t scare this old broad. Jana and I smile at all the goings on around us: kids not listening to parents, people chatting in all kinds of languages, kids playing with the line chains, and a woman unabashedly breast feeding right in line without covering up (yes it’s ok, yes it’s her right, but would I have ever done it? Hell no).
Finally, after forty minutes, it’s our turn, and we are flying! Forget the heat and the waiting and the standing. All of that is suspended once we’re on the ride and living the adventure. I try to take it all in as we pass by the characters. Everything is so creative.
We continue on happily. We fly high in spirit if not on a particular ride. Disneyland suspends ordinary life for the realm of fun and fantasy. Walt Disney was a genius and we walk through his dreams and visions, some of them sixty years old.
Jana and I having fun.
