Migraine Awareness Month #20 – Star Trek Generations

What role do Migraine/Headache Disorders play in your family history?  Do others live with it?  Does this make a difference in how you talk about it?

My mother most likely suffered from Migraines, though hers were few and far between.  I didn’t get the chance to ask her because she died from heart disease just a week after I turned sixteen.  However, I remember a time when she had a terrible “sick headache” and was down for hours.  She said she felt as if a swiss cheese casserole attributed to her illness.  And she suffered terribly from vertigo right around the time menopause was beginning.  My middle sister is another story.

Marsha began her migraine trek in her early twenties just like me.  She believed they were sinus headaches at the time, but later, with the pregnancies of her children, it became clear these were migraines.  That story is my story as well, but from there we differ.  Marsha’s migraines have been more severe and less frequent while mine have generally been the opposite.  Also she has had very infrequent attacks in conjunction with menopause and mine seem to be worsening.  Neither of us have had aura.

Because of this connection, talking about and understanding migraines has been easier than I imagine it would be otherwise.  Marsha’s son also has migraines.  My daughter gets them infrequently, while my son went through a time in grade school when he suffered from migraines.  Luckily he outgrew them.  My kids know what I go through, as does Marsha’s son with her.

Marsha and my older sister, Barbara has even begun to have a few migraines for the first time ever in her sixties.  We thought Barb was escaping with all the good genes as she never had acne, nor cramps with mensus nor even one darn chin whisker like Marsha and I!  Still, I’m sorry she’s been having to deal a little bit with the Migraine Beast that Marsha and I know all too well.

June 2013, Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, is dedicated to Unmasking the Mystery of Chronic Headache Disorders.
