Subtitle: “I Drank the Kool-Aid”
We all try things out of desperation, even when our common sense is telling us they’re not going to do anything. Share your experience with this.
Okay. Just thinking about this is enough to make the migraine beast explode inside my head. With apologies to my non-migraineur sister who only had love in her heart for suggesting this one: Give yourself a brain freeze!
When my sister told me she’d read this article in her local paper about giving yourself a brain freeze to halt a migraine in its tracks, skepticism reigned supreme. That was one of the craziest remedies I’d ever been given, and I know there isn’t a migraneur among us who hasn’t received some “winners”. There was no way I was ever going to try something as ridiculous as giving myself a brain freeze! Right? Uhmmm . . .
Yeah, I confess. Last August I had a migraine perculating in my head, and I just so happened to have a frozen strawberry lemonade in hand. What did I have to lose?
Ohmygosh, where do I begin? It was the worst prolonged-at-high-pain-level migraine I ever experienced! How dumb was I? Duh, I think I’ll give myself a brain freeze. Bad mistake. Do not, I repeat, do NOT, under any circumstance, give yourself a brain freeze to stop a migraine!!!
There is a post script to this story. In November, an elderly friend gave me a newspaper clipping from the home remedies section and you guessed it – it was the dreaded brain freeze suggestion! If Don wasn’t so sweet and concerned and yes, a lot older than me, I would have given him holy hell. Instead, I thanked him politely and said “been there, done that – bad, very very bad, mistake”.
