All my life, I have wished for snow to fall on my birthday. My mother told me it snowed on the day I was born. But in my 21 years of birthdays in New York, I was never gifted with the cold white stuff. Bust after bust over the years in Oregon, until on my big 5-0, we did get a little bit of snow, and I was thrilled.
Today, however, I am flying high. We have three inches so far, and that is the most significant amount of snowfall since December of 2008. I have been out in it, snapping cell phone pictures, tweeting friends, and calling my husband. I feel like a little kid.
This is truly beautiful and unexpected. When I woke up at 7:30, it was raining heavily. I figured it was going to be a typically wet Oregon gray old day. Then suddenly at 8:30am, rain was starting to turn to snow, which made me feel blessed enough. Pretty soon, it looked like a snow globe outside. One inch within an hour, and when I went out to measure a bit ago, it was up to three inches!
I am over the moon with delight. It is so nice to gaze out the window and see all the white frosting on bowing evergreens. It has filled the world with a soft hush. I would have been happy with just snowflakes to look at, and then when it started sticking, I would have been happy for a fleeting time before snowmelt. But it is now three and a half hours later, and snow is still falling, though not as heavily. I got more than just snow for my birthday today. I received a winter wonderland!
